He is a different type of defensive midfielder as he sits deep and dictates play (think Xabi Alonso). He can win the ball when he’s ready, but he is not exactly one of those combative players.
He can also, easily play further forward in midfield as he is a very good footballer, who is excellent on the ball and not only does he keep the ball ticking over.
With his great passing ability and vision, he can open up defenses and create chances. He also has several other strings to his bow in that he’s both footed, has great stamina.
He also takes corners and is a very competent free kick taker. Lastly, every season he will score about 3/4 from outside the box where he can be deadly from that range.
