Controversy as Mayweather defeats Ortiz and remains undefeated….But still the most hated!

After 6 months of intense media promotion, hype, preparation and training, the WBC welterweight title fight in the MGM Grand finished in somewhat controversial and unsatisfying fashion.

Undefeated Floyd Mayweather, after receiving a blatant headbutt to the jaw, knocked out Victor Ortiz in the dying seconds of the 4th round.

To many people it was an anti climax to a fight that looked as though it was heating up to become a real entertaining one. After Victor Ortiz’s blatant head butt, he got caught with his hands down just after they touched gloves when the ref said box on (which I saw) and ultimately paid the price.

Now I must admit I am, and have been for many years a stalwart Floyd Mayweather fan, but even in this instance I am amazed at the blatant hate and criticism directed towards Floyd after this fight. Credited he can do many things to rub people up the wrong way.

But for some reason all and sundry have seemed to forgot that Ortiz was the one that actually did something that was illegal in the ring.

I have watched the fight 4 times now and I can count on atleast two more occasions where Ortiz was unnecessarily putting his head in, even then I didn’t see Floyd complaining.

Any and everybody who claims to be a boxing fan, amateur, professional or expert knows the first rule of boxing is to “protect yourself at all times” weather the ref said box on or not (even though I saw him say and indicate it).

So after Ortiz said sorry and kissed Floyd on the cheek, then said sorry again when they both touched left handed gloves while ref Joe Cortez was taking Ortiz around the ring to take a point off.

Then Ortiz said sorry for a 3rd time when they came together, what was he expecting Floyd to do kiss and make up AGAIN? Did he forget he was in a fight?

Now all of a sudden after Floyd knocked him out, not with one shot mind you, first a left (after which Ortiz still failed to put his gloves up) then a right to send him crashing to the canvass.

Mayweather is the dirty boxer and the dirty fighter with a cheap shot!

Judging how the 4 rounds went, I believe Ortiz got frustrated, he could feel the fight slipping away from him and realised he was starting to get caught with shots while unable to land any of his own.

He lost it a bit and went in blatantly with the head. I even doubt he was hurt enough not the beat that 10 count, I feel he gave up and didn’t want anymore. He realised he was getting outclassed and this was the perfect time to bail out.

After the fight, for someone that got knocked out in a way the Ortiz camp thought was so unjust, he seemed to take it very well.

Victor was all smiles, no loud screams about I want a rematch, instead saying “that’s boxing, that’s how it goes, things happen” etc, very dodgy to me.

What made it even worse, Larry Merchant (who has irritated me for a while now) didn’t want to acknowledge Ortiz’s head butt, while interviewing Floyd he only wanted to talk about what Floyd did.

Then after arguing with Mayweather he turned to Ortiz, even after Floyd said he will give him a rematch, didn’t even bring that up. Instead Merchant was there trying to help Ortiz justify his lame excuse of claiming the butt wasn’t intentional…WTF

End of the day, although all the Anti Mayweather people out there will say he cheated, sucker punched Ortiz, is arrogant and ignorant etc.

The fact still remains that Floyd Mayweather is now the WBC welterweight champion, and now 42 have been put in front of him and 42 have come up short. NEXT!!!!!
