Is this the Magnificent Se7en, or the Magnificnt Scam?

On September the 18th in the Birmingham LG Arena, Frank Warren presents “the Magnificent Seven”. This event will see 14 up and coming boxers in 7 potentially crowd pleasing fights. Impressive? maybe, BUT as impressive as this sounds, out of these 7 bouts not one is for a world title, oh my mistake ONE is for an “interim” world title. So with this I ask the question, why O why is this event on sky box office?

I am an avid boxing fan, but have grown increasingly upset and discouraged by Sky’s lack of ambition in obtaining regular big fights. I have found myself constantly searching the Internet for results of certain fights across the pond, then shaking my head and thinking why wasn’t this on sky? Setanta (god bless them) although punched way above their weight and subsequently went bust because of it, done all they could to get as much big fights as money could buy (long live Setanta). People might say “yeah that’s why Sky is still in business and Setanta are not” true, but Sky has been around alot longer and I am sure they have some extra penny’s to purchase a bit more fights then they get.

I remember the days when paying extra on Sky Box Office for a fight was only reserved for the very top fighters in the sport. Household names who paved their way through the ranks with great past performances that proved they top billing status. Fighters such as Tyson, Lewis, Holyfield, Oscar De La Hoya, even Naseem Hameed was justified in parting with a bit more of your cash to watch their fights live. This event, albeit a good idea is another kick in the teeth for British boxing fans who have been deprived of many real great fighters lately, at the moment we have 3 World Champions, (Haye, Khan who has been knocked out in a minute and Ricky Burns who just claimed his WBO title last week). So to expect us to pay the extra money, on top of the money we already pay to Sky on a monthly basis for fighters that just have potential and have not done, or proved anything to justify this is a joke.

I will be very interested to know how many households actually buy this event? Instead of just going to the pub to watch it. Again as I said before it is a good idea, and there is certainly some good fights on the card, but these kind of events should be happening 3 times a year considering none of the fighters are world champions, these kind of events are what is supposed to educate the British boxing public to the fighters, build a nation wide fan base and when they have justified their UK & then World top billing stature, with some decent performances against decent opponents, then and only then should they be elevated to Box Office status. This is probably the reason why England is lacking so many decent world class fighters, we are giving boxers too much props too soon without allowing them, making them or forcing them to prove and earn the celebrity/top boy adulations. In my view Frank Warren is taking us for a fool and cheating the British public by asking us to pay extra to watch up and coming fighters.

I for one will just wait until it gets replayed the week after on Sky Sports, if you are a real boxing fan I hope you all keep your penny’s in your pocket and put 2 fingers up to Mr Frank Warren in protest of this scam/sham, lets force him, along with Sky Sports to stop depriving us of decent bouts that our sky subscriptions should already be paying for. Hopefully if the numbers are poor and continue to be poor, they will understand that the public determines which fights/fighters are worth paying for not the promoters or the TV companies, they need to learn that for us to part with our hard earned cash, boxers have to earn their right to be shown on Box Office.
