The big four is no more in the Premiership.

Monday 14th March

Above all, the Abu-dhabi money that Man City has so kindly accepted was the main factor behind this bold statement. But also the emergence of Harry Redknapp’s free scoring all attacking Tottenham team, the dramatic fall from grace of Liverpool, and the constant so close but yet so far failings of Arsenal has added substance to it.

Over the past 10 years although many have tried, and come close on a few occasions, the “big four” dominance in the English Premier league has not been broken. Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool give or take a few years have remained at the summit of Europe’s top league throughout, but times are now changing.

Tottenham’s qualification and first foray into the Champions League, has now taken them surprisingly into the Quarter finals after impressively knocking out Italian league leaders Ac Milan. This I’m sure made all of Europe sit up and take notice.

Harry Redknapp’s signing of Raphael Van der Vaart signalled their intent, and gave an indication to the league that they are again big enough to attract Europe’s top players. Sitting in 5th place, 3 points behind Chelsea and 5 Points behind 3rd place Man City with a game in hand. They are well in the fight for a 2nd season in the Champions league.

As stated previously, Manchester City owes all their new found fame and fortune to the Abu-Dhabi group. As much as the rest of the league despises them for it whether it be hate, jealously or envy, they can easily turn round and say “it’s not like Chelsea never did it”. And that is exactly what Man City will hope to emulate. Eight trophies in 7 seasons since Abramovich ploughed his money into the club from West London is not a bad feat to aspire to.

Hopefully the likes of Tevez, David Silva, Yaya Toure, Kholarov, Gareth Barry, Vincent Kompany, and Edin Dzeko can bring this kind of success. Sitting 3rd in the Premiership, a place in the Champions League next season looks on the cards. Unfortunately, 7 points behind the leaders and City rivals Manchester United may just be a bridge to far for the title this season. But a thrilling semi final at Wembley against United in April, may just be the perfect opportunity to signal how far they have come, and are heading.

Liverpool are the team that has opened the gateway into this elite group. The recent boardroom battles, manager changes and players jumping ship has affected them like they would have never believed. So much so that the reds fans have now come to accept they are no longer challenging for the Champions League. But now with the appointment of “King Kenny“, new owners and new players, the signs look encouraging, the club is buzzing again and everyone seems to think next season could see them back challenging for top honours. But as we all know, success is not an over night thing.

Nobody can deny Arsenal play the most attractive football in the league. They potentially have the best young, up and coming talent. But potential is just a word, and what everybody can say is that they now seem to be seasoned bottlers, most likely to fall at the final hurdle.

This 5 season trophy baron spell has given other clubs time to close the gap, or even further pull away. But all it takes is one trophy and Arsenal have the potential to go on a trophy winning run. After all with 10 games to go in The Premierhship, they sit 3 points behind the leaders with a game in hand. This could be the best chance they will ever get. A sixth season without a trophy could spell the end of Arsenal Fc as we know it.

Chelsea seemed to have it all wrapped up in the first few months of the season. Then all of a sudden they started to lose, and lose again, and then couldnt win a game. They now have seemed to whether the storm, but the mid season mishap has all but ended their title hopes, this season at least. But being able to fork out £50 Million of Abramovich’s money on one player, in pursuit of the elusive Champions League, Chelsea and Torres will not be ready to fade into the background just yet.

The team at the top is of course Manchester United, 11 Premiership titles in 18 years speaks for itself. But with Alex Ferguson and players like Gary Neville, Edwin Van der Sar, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and maybe even Rio Ferdinand coming to an end of their careers, the question is will United’s dominance end with them? Do they have the young talented players to keep this winning machine going, or will it leave the door open for another club to take up the mantel?

  1. Hi there, I ran into your site from mixx. It’s not blog post I would regularly read, but I loved your spin on it. Thanks for creating an article worth reading!

I literally learned about nearly all of this, but in spite of this, I still believed it was helpful. Sweet work!
