Done deal. The two words on a Twitter post set tongues wagging, and the rumour mill out of control in the boxing world. That post was by Ryan Garcia, and although it’s still speculation.
Most feel and hope it signifies a deal being agreed with Gervonta Davis for a mega fight that will no doubt capture the imagination.
This is because these are two of the most popular, explosive, and charismatic boxers of today’s generation.
It’s inevitable that with such combined attributes inside and outside of the ring, naturally, the world will stop to watch and witness first-hand what will unfold if they are standing across the ring from each other.
As of today. It is easy to say Davis is more advanced in his career. He is a two-weight world champion and had ten world title fights.
Ryan Garcia has not had any major title fights. However, he did win the interim WBC lightweight title when he beat England’s Olympic gold medallist Luke Campbell, who dropped him in the second round before Garcia came back to stop Campbell in the 7th in an exciting and impressive encounter.
This seems a good time for the fight to happen. There have been rumours of several attempts previously, but it could be on this time.
There is three years difference between the two fighters, and Davis, under the tutelage of Mayweather, is undoubtedly a marquee pay-per-view fighter.
Backed with his aggressive come-forward style and blistering power. He quickly became a household name, blasting his way to several eye-catching knockout victories to hold a version of the WBC lightweight title.
Davis has so far boxed at super featherweight, lightweight and super lightweight, with talk of him eventually ending up at welterweight, which I can understand as fighters get older.
But I feel this could be hard for his height at just 5-foot 5inches. Garcia on the other hand, already stands at around 5-foot 9inches and has fought at lightweight and super lightweight comfortably. I have no doubt he will eventually make his way to welterweight.
That said, I am expecting this fight to most likely be at the 140-pound mark, which is super lightweight. And the power that both these two fighters possess, as they move up, will make this fight very intriguing. Also, the height and reach difference could be pivotal and crucial to each fighter’s game plans.
Both will be looking to impose their game on the other fighter. Davis will look to get in close and work inside, using his explosive uppercut and quick hooks to finish the fight.
Garcia will look to use his height and reach advantage to keep it at distance, use combinations to keep Davis at arm’s length and catch him trying to come in,
However, when it comes to big fight experience and pressure. Although Garcia started with De la Hoya’s Golden Boy, and is a star in his own right, Davis takes that hands down, and a fight like this may come down to the smallest of margins and its the smallest of advantages, which will make all the difference.
A win in such a huge spectacle where both fighters will bring massive fanbases, will catapult either fighter into an even bigger title fight and possibly, in Davis’ case, at last, a huge unification bout.
As stated, I am expecting the fight to be an explosive one, with both fighters possessing the necessary knockout power to end the fight before the final bell. Garcia’s height and reach advantage will be a factor, but so will the quickness of Davis in the pocket.
Being the taller guy, Garcia may even possess even more power punching down. Davis will need all his footwork to stay out of the way of the rangier Garcia and get in close to unleash one of his trademark uppercuts to get the job done.
I think footwork could well be the key to his fight, both have it, but in two very different ways.
Garcia’s bob-and-weave style works to find clear gaps for his explosive, quick combinations.
Davis’ movement is more elusive, but an explosive, short and sharp style, to allow gaps inside to counterpunch.
Either way, with the massive pull and attention they both have behind them, although not for a major title, a version of a world title will be on the line with Davis’ WBA regular title.
It will have all the ingredients to be an absolute classic. I just hope I haven’t read too much into those two words posted on social media, and “done deal” is exactly what I thought it meant. Fingers crossed.
