UFC313 LESSONS LEARNED IN LAS VEGAS

313 was held in the T-Mobile arena in Nevada, Las Vegas, one of the UFC’s favourite venues. The UFC averages about three big events there per year, and it was their first for 2025.

The card was rocked early as a fan-favourite match-up between Justin Gaethje and Dan Hooker was postponed due to an injury to Hooker. So Rafael Fiziev stepped in to rematch Gaethje, following their fight in March 2023, which Gaethje won by majority points in a fight of the night.

In the ten bouts on the card, we saw four stoppages (two ko’s, two submissions), and six went the distance.

TOP PERFORMER: MAURICIO RUFFY

In only his third fight in the UFC and all within the last 10 months, Ruffy is already making a name for himself, with easily the most impressive win of his career.

Ruffy was on the front foot from the first bell, backing up King Green and not bothered by his taunting hand’s low boxing style. He connected with an early right, which got Green’s attention.

Then, after just two minutes, as Green, backed up to the cage, he executed a perfect spinning heel kick that caught Green on the top of the head, sending him face-first to the canvas for a devastating knockout victory.

TOP PERFORMER 2: IGNACIO BAHAMONDES

Coming into this fight the Chilean native was looking to continue his two-fight performance of the night streak.

However, his opponent started well and backed him up with a few punches and kicks. Then, after a grappling exchange, Bahamondes found himself on the ground.

As Jalin Turner tried to work, Bahamondes showed his exceptional wrestling skills to catch Turner in a nasty triangle choke that got tighter by the second, forcing Turner to tap.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Magomed Ankalaev became the new light heavyweight champion by defeating Alex Pereira on points. Although it wasn’t a fight to write home about, with some debating if he did enough to take the title. You cannot doubt the performance of going five rounds with a beast that is Pereira, backing him up and nullifying his attack to take the title.

Justin Gaethje had to navigate a late opponent change to rematch Rafael Fiziev, who, although lost his last two, has three performance of the night and three fight of the night performances in his last seven. After a good first, Gaethje dropped Fiziev in the second round with a lovely uppercut and closed the show in third, for a deserved points win.

Carlos Leal demonstrated a lethal array of attacking skills to overwhelm Alex Morono, forcing the ref to have mercy on his opponent and stop the fight in the first round. Leal walked forward and walked Morono down with a concoction of straight shots, elbows, hooks and knees to beat Morono into submission and exhaustion.
