With the recent arrival of James Milner from Aston Villa, Mr Mancini has now clocked up a total summer spending spree of over 100million …And counting. So with this kind of astronomical, super power, bank rolling, mega money monster, backing behind them, the question remains can anybody stop Manchester City buying the Title?
I for one think with enough money its possible to buy the league title. Hell, its possible to buy ANYTHING with the right amount of money, I mean Jack Walker did it for Blackburn back in 1995, I’m just surprised it took so long for Roman to do it for chelski..oops I mean Chelsea. You do however need a few vital components in place for it to all work.
Judging by the way Roberto Mancini set his stall out on the opening day of the new premier league season you would never have imagined City were a team filled of multi million pound footballers. They were negative, tentative and looked like a team lacking of imagination (well in the first half at least). BUT the truth is, the premier league is a long 9 month trek.
You have to be built for the marathon not the sprint. And in order to do so you have to have a squad worthy of this 9 month Iron man test of endurance and consistency. Modern day football is a squad game bearing in mind it could take you through the deepest darkest depth’s of Europe not to mention weekly excursion’s up and down the busy motorways of the land against similarly ambitious multi talented sides baying for your blood….
First and foremost, lets get real and remember the premiership is a very hard league to win (just ask Liverpool fans). In its 18 year existence the prestigious premier league trophy has only been won by 4 clubs. Compared to the same period in Spain (La Liga) 5 winners, Italy (Serie A) 5 winners, Germany (Bundesliga) 6 winners, France (Ligue 1) 8 winners.
This shows that to pull it off you need real talent and experience throughout your team. From the manager, coaching staff, right through to the players BUT and that is a big but, you have to have the means to compete. Yes, money is the route of all evil but with that money comes the opportunity to elevate a run of the mill, average, up and down the divisions team into a premiership power house. Providing you have the manager capable enough to quell the most massive ego’s into one family sized 25man squad (as it is now a days).
Having money obviously is the key in this day and age, again just look what Roman Abramovich has done for Chelski…oops sorry I mean Chelsea. At the time I’m sure every fan was secretly envious at the prospect of your team having millions to spend on which ever player you choose, providing that millionaire or billionaire is in it for the long haul you are quid’s in…..
Though, If he decides he is bored with his lil play thing takes his money and runs, your club will be up sh*t’s creek without a paddle…and a boat…and life jackets. So the risks are great but the possibility of success, glory and making history outweighs any risk.
The key to the proposed success is undoubtedly talent, which money can take care off, (even though no talent is guaranteed). But more importantly the talent of the manger who has to mould, gel and maneuver all this talent into an 11 man team week in week out as each weak ego’s will be dented while warming their gluteus maximus on the bench.
Can the manager conjure up the necessary tools to convince these ego’s that its all for the love of the team even though they are experiencing the frustration of sitting on the sideline for the first time? Can all this “talent” learn to work together for one common cause?
Will these talented players be up for the fight especially now, as the stigma of being the “money” team they will be a notable scalp on any premiership teams CV? Can they handle the pressure of expectations and live up to the hype? No doubt there are many questions to answer and all will be revealed in the next 9 months which I doubt will end in a 5th premiership winner. But in 21 months maybe …..hmmmm now that could be interesting!
