A significant year in boxing
In September, we had the super fight as Terence Crawford moved up two weight classes to fight Canelo. However, the smaller man surprised all, as he had done all his career, at how easy he made the victory look, putting a real marker down as a potential P4P number one.
However, in July, Oleksandr Usyk made it a triple double of English heavyweight champions as he destroyed Danial Dubois in five rounds to banish the controversy of their first fight to make it six wins, two each against Dubois, Joshua and Fury.
The Japanese monster Naoya Inoue fought twice in 2025. In May, he had a barnstormer with Ramon Cardenas, his first fight outside of Japan. Inoue was knocked down in the second, but secured a knockdown in the seventh, before finishing the fight in the eighth.
After a comfortable but hard-fought unanimous victory against Murodjon Akhmadaliev back in his native Japan to retain all the belts at Super Bantamweight, there is talk that Inoue may still fight for a third time this year at the end of December.
And the hits kept coming
In addition to the universally recognised top three pound-for-pound fighters in the world showcasing their talents in 2025, several other fights caught the eye.
February saw a much-anticipated rematch as Dmitry Bivol avenged his defeat to beat Artur Beterbiev via points to claim all the belts at light heavyweight. This rivalry has grown more intense with every passing day, and we could see an epic rubber match in 2026.
A month later, in March, Lamont Roach put his name well and truly on the map as he fought to a harsh draw against Gervonta Davis in a thrilling fight where many stated Roach was robbed.
Finally coming to the table, Shakur Stevenson had his most exciting fight to date as he stood in the pocket and went toe to toe with William Zapeda, for a deserved unanimous point victory.
And even, at the ripe old age of 46 years and 214 days, the eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao stepped out of retirement in July to challenge Mario Barrios for his WBC welterweight title, which ended in an epic and commendable draw.
Boxing’s Place Among Other Sports
Boxing remains the marquee combat sport. Even as it competes with MMA. Its appeal lies in its tradition and discipline. Boxing is both a test of endurance and strategy, with power, finesse and intellignece, which sets it apart in the crowded field of combat sports.
Upcoming Events
Looking ahead, boxing fans have much to anticipate. With major events on the horizon, on November 22nd, Anthony Yarde embarks on his third attempt for a light heavyweight title as he takes on the mammoth task of The Mexican Monster, David Benavidez.
Also on the card, Devin Haney will attempt to become a three-weight champion as he takes on the big-punching Brian Norman Jr for his WBO welterweight title. Another on the P4P list, Bam Rodriguez will face Fernando Martinez in a unification bout at Super Flyweight, and young star Abdullah Mason, will fight unbeaten Englishman Sam Noakes.
Boxing’s future looks bright, thanks in no small part to Turki Al-Sheikh, who has given the public the fights that people want to see, that promise drama, skill, and excitement. So, gear up for what’s next as we look forward to 2026.
