43-0 Floyd out points a tough and determined Cotto.

Floyd Mayweather fought his way to a unanimous points victory over a strong Miguel Cotto in what he described as “his toughest opponent yet”.

During the fight Cotto made Mayweather bleed from the nose, something Floyd has not experienced in years.

In the end Floyd’s supreme skill, accuracy and newly seen fight and strength led him to a rather harsh 117-111 on two judges and 118-110 but deserved victory.

The fight as usual was staged in the plush MGM Grand arena and as the norm in Floyd Mayweather fights had the celebrity feel to it as the undefeated fighter was accompanied to the ring by close friend 50 cent, Justin Beiber and wrestler Triple H all holding his array of World Championship belts.

Miguel Cotto on the other hand was accompanied to the ring by his young son and his training team.

He looked in a mean mood since the weigh ins and his expression never changed. As the fight started Cotto came out aggressive but Mayweather typically was the more accurate just breaking through Cotto’s high guard with wide right hands.

In my eyes the first 4 rounds went to Mayweather, even though Cotto was trying to be aggressive, often cut off the ring and backed Mayweather up on the ropes.

But the undefeated fighters signature defensive shoulder role move kept Cotto from doing any damage. During which, Mayweather’s hand speed was evident as his quick, precise right hand caught the Puerto Rican frequently.

With that being said, Cotto was finding success with the jab and had caught Mayweather on more the one occasion.

In the fifth round the Puerto Rican made his most significant contribution in the bout as his heavy jabs took its tool and drew blood from Mayweather’s nose to everyone’s surprise.

Though Mayweather was being caught more than ever before he continued to smile and shake his head at Cotto’s attacks.

In the sixth round Mayweather came back and took the round standing his ground as the pair began to go toe to toe in what was beginning to become a gruelling and exciting fight

Cotto began to take over from the seventh round as his aggressive style and extra weight seemed to become a factor.

This was the first time Mayweather had fought at this weight, where as Cotto was comfortable at the 154 weight and for the first time Mayweather looked increasingly uncomfortable as he was  backed into the ropes and caught with hard looking hooks to the body and head.

This aggressive style led Cotto to take the next 3 rounds as the Puerto Rican looked strong and determined.

As the 10th round began the crowd, which seemed a 60/40 split with more people in the crowd from Puerto Rico were on the edge of their seats, they sensed an upset and Cotto seemed to be on a role.

This is where the undefeated fighters brilliance showed as he developed a new weapon in the bout, a sharp left upper cut.

He had used it earlier in the fight but now seemed to recognize as Cotto came forward the Puerto Rican was more open to it. He also showed the world a new string to his bow his strength and fight.

Just as the aggressive and naturally bigger Cotto threatened to out fight Mayweather, the undefeated fighter began to stand his ground and find holes in Cotto’s high guard.

He adapted to Cotto’s aggressive come forward style and this is where he found the particular success with the left upper cut.

Mayweather went on to take the 10th and the 11th round using his skill and this newly seen macho fight.

Cotto was game throughout and persisted with his aggressive approach that had seen him get more success than an other opponent Mayweather had faced.

By the time the 12th round came about everyone knew only a stoppage would earn Cotto victory for all his efforts.

In the final round Mayweather’s montage of “hard work and dedication” was never more evident and demonstrated as he looked strong and picked off a tiring Cotto.

Mayweather continued to go to the left upper cut and rocked Cotto midway through the round as the Puerto Rican had no choice but to hold on to clear his head.

Mayweather closed the round looking strong and in control but knew Cotto had pushed him all the way in what was a thrilling fight.

After the fight as the pair embraced and while telling Cotto he was the “toughest opponent he had ever faced” he also claimed he was a “hell of a champion”.

This was great credit to the Puerto Rican who really did give a bloody and bruised Mayweather plenty of problems and forced him into a real fight.

During his post fight interview with Larry Merchant (who announced to the world Floyd apologized a day before this fight, for the bust up after the Victor Ortiz fight).

Mayweather again called out Manny Pacquiao and claimed the reason why the fight has been so difficult to make is because of Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum.

Nevertheless this was Floyd’s night in what was a well deserved, hard-fought victory. Mayweather will now have to look forward to a 90 day jail sentence starting on June 1st.
