Sunday May 13th 2012 will go down as not only a memorable day in Manchester City’s history but a memorable day in the English Premier League’s history and football in general.
The blue half of Manchester snatched the league title from the brink of defeat, with virtually the last kick of the season.
Just as the red side of Manchester were about to celebrate winning their 20th title.
Before all the drama unfolded there was still so much to play for on this last day of the Premier League season.
It was a day where not only the league title was decided but the final relegation spot was decided, not to mention who will end up in 3rd place and that crucial automatic Champions League place. While 4th will have a nail-biting wait for the outcome of the Champions League final to see if they have actually qualified.
The first goal of the day was scored in the first minute by Tottenham’s Adebayor but Spurs had no time to celebrate 3rd place as West Brom keeper Marton Fulop making his debut made a horrendous mistake to let Arsenal’s Yossi Benayoun score on 3 minutes.
The next goal to go in was on the 7th minute as Norwich City’s Grant Holt scored his 14th against Aston Villa, capping off a great season.
A minute later relegated Wolves scored through Matt Jarvis, then after only 10 minutes another twist as Shane Long equalised for West Brom v Arsenal pushing the Gunners back into 4th. As it stands Tottenham will qualify automatically for the Champions League.
Five goals were scored in a five minute spell as Di Santo had equalised for Wigan against Wolves (11) more significantly Jon Walters scored for Stoke (12) against Bolton (who were going down at this stage) and Emmerson Boyce (13) gave Wigan the lead against already relegated Wolves.
Then another twist in the Champions League places as Graham Dorrans gave West Bromwich the lead against Arsenal (14) and Pienaar scored for Everton (15) against Newcastle who still had an outside chance of finishing 3rd or 4th.
On 19 minutes came the first twist in the title race as Wayne Rooney scored for Man Utd from close range at Sunderland. As it stands United were champions but there was a long way to go. A minute later Norwich doubled their lead against a lacklustre Aston Villa through Simeon Jackson.
There was a lull in the scoring for all of six minutes until Everton revelation Jelavic doubled Everton’s lead v Newcastle as the Magpies Champions League hopes was virtually over.
Three minutes later Arsenal were back in the hunt as another mistake by Fulop allowed Andre Santos to equalise.
A minute later on 30 minutes John Terry, banned for the Champions League final scored his 6th league goal against Blackburn capping his most prolific season for goals.
Three minutes later another banned player for the Champions league final Raul Meireles double Chelsea’s lead against Steve Keans men.
Two goals on the 38th minute were significant at both ends of the table, Mark Davies equalised for Bolton at Stoke City where only a win would be enough. At the Etihad after loads of pressure Man City finally scored through the most unlikely of sources Pablo Zabaleta, scoring his first of the season. So as it stood Manchester City were now champions.
A minute before half time the relegation battle took a huge twist as Kevin Davies scored for Bolton to give them the lead and as it stood QPR were relegated.
HALF TIME
Only two minutes into the second half, at the Etihad Stadium there was another twist and the title race had some real drama as Cisse equalised for QPR after a terrible error from Lescott. As it stands Man United were champions.
There was more drama in the race for the Champions League on 53 minutes at the Hawthornes as Arsenal came back from 2-1 down to lead West Bromwich 3-2 with a Koscielny goal, that must have broken Spurs fans hearts. As it stands Arsenal will automatically qualify for the Champions League.
On 59 minutes Yakubu pulled a goal back for Blackburn scoring an impressive 17 for the season.
On 62 minutes Jermain Defoe double Tottenham’s lead against Fulham and in doing so became their 10th all time top scorer. On 65 minutes Heitinga made it 3-0 for Everton as Newcastle were resigned to settle for a Europa League spot.
In the same minute it looked as though we had the most significant action of the day. 10 man QPR went 1-2 up through Mackie, Joey Barton had only been sent off 10 minutes earlier and Man City, unbeaten at home were amazingly losing and handing the title to Man United. As it stands Man Utd are Champions.
On 72 minutes Hibberts own goal pulled one back for Newcastle at Everton, then 4 minutes later disaster for Owen Coyle and Bolton as Crouch was fouled by Bogdan and Walters gets his second from the penalty spot to make it 2-2. As it stands Bolton are relegated.
On 78 minutes Wigan capped off their season by going 3-1 up against Wolves as Boyce scored his second with a stunning volley. On 85 minutes Fletcher pulled a goal back for Wolves while Danny Graham scored his 100th league goal to break the dead lock for Swansea at home to a disappointing Liverpool team.
We have now entered the 90th minute on the last day of the 2011-2012 Premier League season, as it stands Manchester United are champions Arsenal will finish 3rd and Bolton are relegated.
Just as the title was slipping away from Man City, on the 92nd minute substitute Eden Dzeko rises high to head in David Silva’s corner, GAME ON with minutes to go but as it stands Manchester United are still champions. 30 seconds later the game at Sunderland finishes with Man United winning 1-0.
BUT, less than a minute later Sergio Aguero ghosts into the box from Ballotelli’s flick, he shoots he SCORES, Man City are leading 3-2, seconds later the whistle blows and the Etihad erupts, Man City are English Premier League Champions for the first time.
Under no circumstances could anyone have written this script, this is the stuff of what dreams are made off, excitement and drama until the very last-minute, the very last kick. Nobody will ever forget this season and just how the league was won. Congratulations Manchester City!
