The Young and the Restless.
On the opening day of season 1995-96, after watching Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa, Alan Hansen proclaimed “you’ll never win anything with kids”. In that same season Alex Ferguson went on to win the league and cup double with Manchester United’s youngest squad ever. Over the past few years and apart from the obvious few, as the financial constraints begin to squeeze ever so tighter, managers have desperately tried to unearth young players looking for the next generation of big stars.
This season, with the financial fair play rule drawing closer, being able to call on young talent has never been more important. With the influx of foreign players over the past 15 years in the Premier League, it became extremely hard for young players to break into the first team squads.
Now with the new revamped Under 21’s league replacing the reserve league this season and the second season of the NextGen series. Young players have more than enough of a platform to perform, display their talents and hopefully show they are good enough to fulfill their dreams of one day playing for the first team.
Due to these new outlets, and of course the extensive TV coverage that follows football in all levels, fans are now more aware of their teams young talent. But, even though most teams seem to have an abundance of young talent, few make it into the first team. If they do, many only get a few games here and there and never really materialize into an established first team player.
As stated previously, Alex Ferguson led the way in the mid 90’s when he introduced young players such as Beckham, Scholes, Giggs, Gary Neville and Nicky Butt early into the side. They all went on to win multiple trophies for United and were an integral part of the dynasty that is the clubs most successful spell in their history.
In the past few seasons it has become more evident that managers realise a crop of good youngsters integrated with a few big money signings are the keys and backbone to success. Not all can unearth young stars from scratch. But if they buy them very young, then bring them up through the ranks, while giving them valuable experience playing in tournaments like The NextGen series and the new under 21s league. it will be very beneficial to the future of the club.
I have picked out 5 under 21 players from each team that could be the future stars for their clubs.
