Velasquez slays the giant Lesnar to become the baddest man on the planet.
The date was Saturday 23rd October, the place was Anaheim, the event was UFC 121. This day will undoubtedly go down as a significant occasion in UFC’s growing history. It was the day when a new era began in UFC….Ladies and gentlemen I give you, Cain Velasquez!
UFC 121’s main event was an intriguing encounter between the UFC heavyweight champion, the man mountain that is Brock Lesner, a former top class amature wrestling champion and WWE celebrity. And Cain Velasquez a slick, strong, powerful & technically sound heavyweight who saw off all challenges with a combination of strength, speed, punching power and superior technical ability.
Even though Lesner was little more inexperienced in the octagon, his natural size, wrestling skill and all round power led him to becoming only the 2nd man in UFC history to win a championship in his 4th fight. The first being the legend that is 47-year-old and still fighting Randy “the natural” Couture.
All the early money was on Lesner, especially after the way he persevered in his previous fight against Shane Carwin, coming through a torrid first half to pull off the victory in the 2nd round to keep his belt. But the closer the fight got, all the seasoned UFC heads began to look at it intelligently. I guess the way Lesner struggled in the first round against Carwin, also the way he was defeated by Frank Mir due to his inexperience, made some of the money begin to shift to Velasquez. Lesner was still the favourite even though he only had 2 more fights in the octagon than Lesner, and was the unbeaten fighter. Valasquez though was extremely impressive in his last fight. Knocking out Antonio Nogueira @ UFC 110 who was a very tough, experienced fighter of 39 pro fights with 32 wins.
So the time had come, the fighters had entered the octagon, Bruce Buffer announced the fighters and the crowd noise, excitement and anticipation was at its maximum decible level. The bell for the start of the fight rung and Lesner came out hard and fast, charged at Valasquez with punches then a flying knee, then tried to take Velasquez down.
The Mexican stayed calm and weathered the mini early storm, then began to unleash his own barrage of punches, suddenly he had stopped Lesner in his tracks…and he knew it.Velasquez then began to stand his ground a throw more punches, low and behold Lesner looked affected…and stunned, and then dare I say it hurt.
Velasquez took more steps forward throwing more punches and stumbles Lesner, then even more steps forward and punches, Lesner then falls, then while trying to get up stumbles across the octagon. Velasquez knew this was the chance to go in for the kill so began to push the pace. Throwing strong, straight punches with supreme technical ability, it was too much for Lesner and the champion falls to the ground with claret streaming from his face.
Velasquez was never gonna let Lesner get up from there and he went in for the kill, raining down with hammer fist blow after blow until Lesner was unable to defend himself. This forced referee Herb Dean to stop the fight after 4.12 in the first round to crown a new, and the first ever Mexican UFC heavyweight champion. A new era has began, and I feel this guy has the skill and power to be as dominant in the UFC as heavyweight king Fedor Emelianenko was in Affliction and Pride and numerous other promotions.
