Premier League Team of the Season 2013-2014
I’m sure all will agree it was a superb season and easily one of the best the Premier League has witnessed. We were spoiled and treated to a multitude of high scoring and nail-biting games with a bundle of superb goals.
But unfortunately all good things come to an end and the season is over. Traditionally I have put together my team of the season with my preferred formation of 433 and each positions runner-up below.
Again some may agree or disagree but these are my decisions and I am sticking to them đ
GOALKEEPER
David Marshall – Cardiff CityÂ
Even though Cardiff were relegated I was in awe at some of his performances. In my opinion he performed the same way early in the season when Cardiff were doing well as he did when Cardiff were struggling late on. I lost count how many games turned into an opposing team v Marshall spectacle. They would have been dead and buried a lot sooner if it wasn’t for his heroics and I will be amazed if we dont see him in the Premier League next season.
Runner Up – Hugo Lloris – Tottenham
RIGHT BACK
Seamus Coleman – Everton
Buccaneering down the right flank he had somewhat of a coming of age season. He really grew into the position and was a real threat going forward while decent and reliable at the back. His exciting, energetic and very consistent performances was like a throwback to the old-fashioned right backs. No nonsense defending, while providing great support and danger in attack with the occasional spectacular goal.
Runner Up – Pablo Zabaleta – Manchester City
CENTER BACK
GARY CAHILL – Chelsea
The best compliment I can pay him is you hardly noticed him. Defenders are mostly noticed when they are making a mistake or getting terrorised by a striker on the pitch. Often when they make a last-ditch challenge its to make up for being out of position or beaten. The fact that Cahill went through the season hardly being mentioned is a testament to how solid he has been and how he has really grown into a top class, consistent and reliable defender.
Runner Up – Per Mertesacker – Arsenal
CENTER BACK
Vincent Kompany – Manchester City
Even though we have seen one or two frailties from him this season, on the whole he still was one of the stand out defenders. The biggest complement is when he wasn’t in the City side, his absence was noticeable and his presence was missed. Even among City’s team of stars he is quite clearly their leader and always led by example. It was so fitting he scored the teams last goal of the season before lifting the league trophy.
Runner Up – Branislav Ivanovic – Chelsea
LEFT BACK
Leighton Baines – Everton
It was another consistent and solid season from the experienced full back. I don’t think he was as spectacular or explosive as last season but with right backs up and down the country looking to do a number over England’s no1, he had arguably an even better season. Still provided a number of superb goals from free kicks and assists from corners as well as in free play. He also looked unflappable at the back and a leader to his team mates.
Runner Up – Luke Shaw – Southampton
RIGHT MIDFIELD
AARON RAMSEY – Arsenal
He was easily one of my players of the season and it was a tragedy he got injured. He had an amazing start to the season, overshadowed and outshone everyone in Arsenal’s star-studded midfield. Arsenal’s chances were considerably hindered once he got injured and it wasn’t any coincidence they began to perform again when he returned. He regained his form, got stronger with every game and it was fitting and poetic justice his goal won them their first trophy in 9 years.
Runner Up – Adam Lallana – SouthamptonÂ
CENTER MIDFIELD
YAYA TOURE – Manchester City
Quite simply, he had a mammoth of a season for City and was the driving force in their title-winning season. A beast in the middle of the park, he demonstrated every aspect of a complete footballer. Driving runs with the ball, tracking back and winning the ball, beating players, creating goals, scoring goals in the air as well as on the deck. Scoring free kicks and making late runs in the box to finish off a move. Arguably the leagues MVP.
Runner Up – Steven Gerrard
LEFT MIDFIELD
EDEN HAZARD – Chelsea
Going forward he was that one spark that complemented Chelsea’s stern back line and that combination almost took them to the summit. At one stage during the season he was unplayable and took on the reigns of both provider and goalscorer for Chelsea. It’s unbelievable by his mature and leader type performances to think he is still only 23. Was rightly picked as the young player of the year. It’s scary to think he could get even better.
Runner Up – Samir Nasri – Manchester City
RIGHT ATTACKER
Luis Suarez – Liverpool
It was a record-breaking season for the Uruguayan who almost took Liverpool from seventh to the title. It’s amazing to think he missed the first five games of the season but still ended it top scorer, second for assists and joint winner of the European golden boot award. For long periods of the season he was unplayable, scoring all types of goals from all types of angles. No surprises he won the players and football writers player of the year.
Runner Up – Raheem Sterling – Liverpool
CENTER FORWARD
Sergio Aguero – Manchester City
For most of the early part of the season he was the stand out striker, leading the way in goals and striking fear into defenders up and down the country. He has a certain knack of scoring difficult goals or scoring when his team most need it. His injury halted his juggernaut season but when he came back, he was right on track to start banging in goals again. Played a huge role in the run in of the season to help City to the title.
Runner Up – Wayne Rooney – Manchester United
LEFT ATTACKERÂ
Daniel Sturridge – Liverpool
Even with two spells out with injury he finished the season second top scorer. Became the first Liverpool player since the 70’s to score in his first three games for the club and the first Liverpool player to score in seven consecutive Premier League games. Also only the second player in Premier League history to score in eight consecutive games. Not bad for a player most thought couldn’t play as a central striker and was a risky purchase for ÂŁ12m.
Runner Up – Romalu Lukaku – Everton
