Is British boxing heading into an era of mega domestic fights?

The success and euphoria around the recent Carl Froch v George Groves battles looks like it could be the catalyst to an exciting new era in British boxing. What adds weight to this is the up coming Cleverly v Bellew rematch and the ensuing young, mega collision between two of the brightest young British boxing prospects around, Chris Eubank Jr and Billy Joe Saunders on November 29th.

Cleverly v Bellew 2 is due to be a huge affair at Cruiserweight, following their light heavyweight bout in 2011, which Cleverly won in a very close points decision.

The two fighters went their separate ways and were both subsequently defeated in title fights then moved up in weight and now back for a rematch in a defining fight.

B0th have genuine dislike for each other, bordering on hate. Both are desperate for a win to go on to bigger and better things and will be devastated if they lose this fight.

Eubank Jr V Saunders to me looks an even more interesting bout. Both are young, up and coming, undefeated prospects with high hopes of being a world champion. Normally these types of young prospects would be kept apart until they are on the world stage or both have belts, but the fact that they are fighting while on their way up makes this huge.

Both have completely different personalities and fighting styles.

The contrast in styles is sure to bring out the best in each other and this could be a real classic….With the prospect of a rematch and possibly a rubber match.

Looking to the future, it seems the British public are in a real purple patch of great domestic match ups. With that being said, what other great British battles could the British public possibly see?

Khan v Brook – Welterweight

This is probably the obvious one and quite possibly the next big fight to happen. Although it’s delayed due to Brook’s unfortunate stabbing recently, signs look as though the fight will still happen.

They have both demonstrated dislike for each other with a series of insulting comments, not to mention their onscreen face to face argument on SkySports. With both now fully established on the world stage this fight is sure to capture the imagination of fight fans at home and abroad.

Carl Frampton v Scott Quigg – Super Bantamweight

Although it may not capture the masses or draw in non boxing crowds, within the boxing fraternity it would be a huge battle. Both are strong, skillful warrior like fighters who are undefeated and hold a version of the world super bantamweight title. It will be a classic Anglo-Irish clash with plenty of needle and partisan crowds backing each fighter.

Anthony Joshua v Tyson Fury or Hughie Fury – Heavyweight

This is providing Joshua continues his meteoric rise and Tyson Fury, who I’m not the biggest fan of continues to win. Failing that, there is a ready-made replacement in his cousin Hughie.

The more you see Joshua the more he is looking like the next big thing, not only in the heavyweight division but in the sport period. I’m sure with Tyson’s mouth and ego he will relish a shot at the next big thing. Hughie is someone I feel is progressing nicely. He has the skills and ability to make a name for himself in this division, if he develops much like he has, a massive clash with Joshua could be huge for British boxing in the near future.

Groves v DeGale 3 – Super Middleweight

Yes this is quite possible. Even though Groves holds a 2-0 record, both were very close fights and it looks as though there is still an interest in this rivalry.

It also seems no matter what they both do their paths seems to always cross or end up meeting. DeGale, although in my opinion has not really fought any big prospects, he has dispatched them impressively and probably will want to cash in on Groves’ popularity to deliver some desperately needed revenge. Groves will simply think he has DeGale’s number.

Tommy Coyle v Luke Campbell – Lightweight

The talk is this fight has to happen. Two Hull born fighters who are friends and have genuine world title credentials could be heading for a mega showdown next summer, possibly in Hull City’s stadium. Coyle is 2 years younger but way more experienced with knockout power. Campbell in the strong, exciting London Olympic gold medalist who put Hull on the map. This fight will be huge and sure to divide the town of Hull and England.

Khalid Yafai v Jamie Conlan with Paul Butler waiting – Super Flyweight

This fight or fights may not mean much to most but I feel all are on a collision course and it must only be a matter of time before they lock horns.

Yafai & Conlan are exciting prospects who possesses a devastating punch and although relatively inexperienced, they’re not exactly young prospects so a match up could be made soon. Yafai has 11 wins with 8 knockouts, Conlan has 11 wins with 7 knockouts. If they meet it promises to be explosive. The winner could have the added incentive of a shot at the undefeated two weight champion Paul Butler.
