2026 Premier League January transfer window review

It was a low-key January transfer window for Premier League teams. The spending totalled £325m, which was down from a year ago, when clubs spent £421m.

Below is a short review of each team’s business this winter and their total spending.

MANCHESTER CITY – £85m

If there is one thing about Man City, it is that they do not rest on their laurels. If they have a gap, they will not hesitate to plug it. Semenyo, at £65m, was brought in to add attacking flair and goals, and it’s fair to say he’s been an instant hit.

Then, with major injuries at the back, they plucked Guehi for £20m from under the noses of Liverpool, and it will probably turn out to be the move of the window.

CRYSTAL PALACE – £83m

After losing arguably their two best players, Eze in the summer, and Guehi in the winter. Palace owed it to the fans to bring players in.

They are hoping the combination of Brennan Johnson, £35m, and Jordan Stand Larsen, £48m, will bring excitement and goals. With Evann Guessand, on loan from Villa, adding some flair.

TOTTENHAM – £47.8m

It has been a turbulent season for the Spurs, and they needed a lift in their window. So, after losing Johnson, the hope is that Conor Gallagher, £34.7m, can hit the ground running.

Also, young Brazilian full-back Souza, £13m, can adapt as quickly as possible in England.

WEST HAM UNITED – £47m

The Hammers find themselves at the wrong end of the table and need a lift in winter, especially as they lost Paqueta, Fulkrug and Ward-Prowse, although the latter two did not have much impact.

However, the Disasi on loan has already made a positive impact. So has striker Castellanos £25.2m. They will now hope Brazilian forward Pablo, £21.8m, and loan signing Adama Traore can do the same.

BOURNEMOUTH – £36.5m

Very much in a transition period after losing several of their stars in the summer, The Cherries brought in Brazilian, teenage forward Rayan £30.3m, who has made a superb start.

They will also need midfielder Toth, £10.4m, to do the same to soften the blow of losing Semenyo. Bournemouth also brought in two goalkeepers, free agent Fraser Forster and Christos Mandas on loan from Lazio.

ASTON VILLA – £28.7m

After a very slow start to the season, Villa have been superb and even have faint title hopes. For that second half of the season push, Tammy Abraham, £18.2m, is back for a second stint. Also, Douglas Luiz is back, on loan from Juve.

They also bought teenage Brazilian forward Alysson for £10m, with the likes of Malen, Guessand, Ozcan, and Iling-Junior, all going out on loan.

FULHAM – £27m

The West Londoners only brought in one player this window, the highly touted Oscar Bobb, £27m from Man City, who will relish getting more games in a team that plays passing football. Adama Traore has gone out on loan to West Ham.

SUNDERLAND – 23.6m

Sunderland will hope to continue their superb first half of the season, but needing more goals, they have brought in forwards Nilson Angulo, £17.5m and Jocelin Ta Bi, £4m, with goalkeeper Melker Ellborg, £3m.

With no less than 13 players out, mostly on loan, including Simon Adingra to Monaco.

BRENTFORD – £8.7m

Many were expecting Brentford to struggle this season after losing several of their best players in the last few windows, but they have been exceptional.

That probably reflects why they have only brought in one player, teenage forward Kaye Furo, for £8.7m. They have six players going out on loan, including Frank Onyeka, who is heading to Coventry.

WOLVES – £7.7m

It was a low-key winter window for Wolves, who might just have conceded, even halfway through the season, that they are going down. However, after losing Strand Larsen, they brought in Adam Armstrong for £7.7m to add goals, and Angel Gomez on loan from Marseille.

NOTTINGHAM FOREST – £2.1m

In recent years, Forest have become accustomed to doing plenty of business in the window. This time around, it was three players in as they attempt to fight the threat of relegation.

Striker Lorenzo Lucca has come in on loan from Lazio. Ortega £5k will give Sels some competition in goal, and Luca Netz £2m is a German defender.

BRIGHTON – £1.8m

This window, Brighton has let no fewer than nine players out on loan, notably, Gruda to Leipzig and Buonanotte to Leeds. Coming in is former player Gross, £1.8m, after 18 months with Dortmund.

ARSENAL – £0

Although the league leaders are blessed with a deep squad, they may rue not bringing in at least one player to refresh the team in their quest for a first league title in over twenty years. They may also rue allowing Nwaneri go out on loan to Marseille.

BURNELY – £0

It is very likely that, although it’s still mathematically possible for them to stay up, Burnley’s decision not to do business this winter was influenced by the likelihood of them being relegated this season.

CHELSEA – £0

It’s always a surprise when Chelsea do not do any business, as we have become so accustomed to them splashing the cash. However, it may have been influenced by having a new manager.

They did let a few go out, most notably Sterling as a free agent. Disasi to West Ham on loan and young Tyreek George to Everton on loan.

EVERTON – £0

Everton are having a reasonable season by their standards, and somewhat surprisingly, they didn’t add any first-team names to their squad. However, they did bring in young Chelsea star Tyreek George on loan, who hopes to get some valuable minutes.

LIVERPOOL – £0

After spending almost £500m in the summer, it comes as no surprise that Liverpool opted to do no business in this window. However, they did agree to spend £60m to sign highly touted defender Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes, which will go through in the summer.

LEEDS UNITED – £0

Leeds can be relatively happy with the first half of the season; this may be the reason for no business this winter.  However, they did bring in Facundo Buonanotte on loan from Brighton, with Jack Harrison going out on loan to Fiorentina.

NEWCASTLE – £0

Ever since it has been known about the riches of the Newcastle owners, it’s always a surprise how minimal business they have been doing, and this window is no exception.

You would have thought Newcastle would bring at least one fresh face in, but no. They did let a few go out, including former club captain Lascelles, to Leicester.

MANCHESTER UNITED – £0

Although they have recently lost their manager and have an interim, for a club with the stature of Man Utd, it is still very surprising to see them do no business in any window.

However, their manager’s situation is undoubtedly the big influence in this decision.
