WEEKLY AWARDS: MAY 22nd 2022

TEAM: MANCHESTER CITY

Although at the start of the day everyone was expecting them to be champions, with 20 minutes to go, it was looking like a monumental collapse.

However, with the pressure on and time running out, they showed their championship metal by scoring three goals in six minutes for an amazing turnaround to claim their fourth Premier League title in five years.

Well done also to Tottenham, Arsenal, Leicester, Liverpool, Brighton, Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Leeds, who were close to winning this.

GOALKEEPER: ALISSON (Liverpool)

Hard on this week. However, although it was irrelevant in the end, during the game, when Liverpool needed the win and seemed to struggle with the pressure.

The Liverpool keeper kept his nerve and although he was beaten once, he kept the score down to just the one, which eventually allowed his team to get the win they needed.

But it could have been much more of a struggle if their keeper wasn’t on his game like the rest of the team. Shout out also to Leeds’ Meslier. Palace’s Guaita and Newcastle’s Debravka.

DEFENDER: ANDY ROBERTSON (Liverpool)

This was quite a hard one, especially with games where a few were playing for something and others were just playing for pride.

However, I went for the Liverpool man as when the pressure was on and his teammates, especially the defenders seem to be losing discipline, he kept his head, to make a few vital challenges and blocks.

Then, when winning, in the last few minutes, as per usual he was still giving energy and managed to get up the pitch to score in the 89th minute, to seal the game.

Well done also to Arsenal duo Gabriel and Cedric. Brighton’s Veltman. Wolves’ Boly. Palace duo Anderson & Ward. Villa’s Cash and Man City’s Zinchenko who was close to winning this.

MIDFIELDER: ILKAY GUNDOGAN (Man City)

He came into the game in the 68th minute and a minute later he saw his team go two goals down. That must have been demoralising knowing what was at stake.

But he rolled up his sleeves and grabbed the game by the scruff of its neck. He importantly pulled a goal back in the 78th minute, then after City equalised two minutes later. He got the even more important winner in the 81st minute, to seal another Premier League title for Man City.

Shout out also to his teammate Rodri. Tottenham’s Kulusevski. Villa’s Coutinho. Arsenal trio Saka, Odegaard & Martinelli. Brighton’s Gross. Chelsea duo James & Barkley. Watford’s Gosling. Everton’s Van de Beek. Leicester duo Maddison & Perez. Leeds duo Raphinha and Harrison who was close to winning this.

FORWARD: HEUNG-MIN SON (Tottenham)

It has been a superb season for the South Korean which was topped off on the last day of the season by scoring two goals to finish joint top scorer, winning the golden boot.

It was the first time in 7 years Kane has not finished as Spurs’ top scorer and what was even more impressive was that his tally contained no penalties.

Typically he took his goals very well and was unlucky not to get a hat-trick to win the golden boot outright.

Well done also to his teammate Kane. Liverpool’s Mane. Wolves’ Neto. Arsenal’s Nketiah, Burnley’s Cornet. Brighton’s Welbeck. West Ham’s Antonio. Chelsea’s Havertz. Palace’s Zaha. Leicester’s Vardy.

MANAGER: JESSE MARSCH (Leeds Utd)

Although Leeds was 16th when he was appointed, they were in free fall and had a ridiculously long injury list.

It took him a while to get going and was under pressure from the moment he stepped into the hot seat. Quite frankly, with a few games to go, I couldn’t see how they were going to survive.

But they picked up some vital points in the run in and then on the last day of the season, with time ticking away, they pushed for a winner at Brentford, which eventually came in the 94th minute. Shout out also to Pep Guardiola.

UNSUNG HERO: JACK HARRISON (Leeds)

He’s obviously not unsung, however, the next best thing to scoring two goals and winning your team the Premier League title on the last day is to score a very last minute goal to secure your team’s Premier League status.

Everyone connected to Leeds was desperate for a hero and he stepped up just at the right time to be the man of the hour to win the game. Man City’s Rodri was also close to winning this.

GAME: MAN CITY 3-2 ASTON VILLA

With the title on the line, Man City started the game very nervy but had a few chances.

However, Villa took the lead when Ramsey picked up the ball in his half and travelled deep into the city half and played a ball left for Digne, who put a lovely ball in for Cash to steal in front of his marker and head home (37).

In the second half, Villa was two up from a goal kick that was flicked on by Watkins. As the ball came down, Coutinho cut inside with the outside of his foot, then stroked it home at the near post from just outside the box (69).

City finally pulled a goal back when Sterling took on his marker down the right and put in a ball to the back post for Gundogan to head home (76).

They were soon level when Zinchenko cut inside his marker and squared a ball for Rodri to side foot home from outside the box, in at the near post (78).

City then got the winner after a bad touch from Mings was seized upon by De Bruyne, who put in a wonderful low ball to the back post for Gundogan to tap home and claim the Premier League title (81).

GOAL: PASCAL GROSS (Brighton) v West Ham

With the game level at 1-1. Brighton took a throw in from the right which found Maupay who found some space just inside the box on the right.

He volleyed it back first time to Wellbeck, who controlled and played a ball into Mwepu just outside the box, who touched it first time back to Wellbeck.

He then touched it first time into Gross, who with his back to goal, controlled with his right, swivelled and hit a left footed effort into the near top corner. There were also good goals from Tottenham’s Son & Kuluveski as well as West Ham’s Antonio.

FOOL: BURNLEY FC

Although they might be a bit upset with Brentford and in particular Raya & Canos. First of all, they sacked their manager Sean Dyche in April while in the relegation zone, in hope of giving the team a kick start in the run in.

It looked like it may have worked as Burnley had it in their hands on the final day of the season. All they needed was a home win against Newcastle, who wasn’t playing for much but pride.

You couldn’t help but think Dyche would have steered them to victory on the last day for a great escape. However, Burnley lost the game and lost their six-year Premier League status. FOOLS!
