Stephen Lee receives “appropriate” 12 year ban for match fixing snooker.

Stephen LeeStephen Lee receives “appropriate” 12 year ban for match fixing snooker.

On Wednesday 25th of September snookers governing body handed Stephen Lee its biggest suspension in history for match fixing. Lee was handed a 12 year suspension for fixing the outcome of seven matches in 2008 and 2009.

Lee has appealed this ban which has since been rejected and a further appeal is rumoured in the future following this ban. He has also been told to pay £40.000 in costs after an earlier independent tribunal hearing, where Lee’s manager Neal Clague and four other Manx businessmen were named for suspicious betting.

Ironically, the ban will run from October 12th 2012 until October 12th 2024 which is actually the date of his birthday. Lee will be 50 when the ban ends so effectively, the ban has ended his snooker career.

Stephen Lee.Although Lee vehemently denies these charges and claims his innocents, I applaud snooker for this kind of action.

Match fixing in rife around the world and has affected probably every major sport.

Due to the kind of money sport generates, the sheer scale of match fixing around the world knows no bounds and in my opinion is probably the worst thing about sport. It strips and deprives fans of the innocents of the sport and turns it into a moral less underworld of lies, greed and deception. Influenced by people who generally don’t care about the actual sport.

Match fixing is also commonly connected to large crime organisations and syndicates which in particular makes it connected to other crimes such as drugs, fraud, money laundering and even murder. Yea I went there; it is that serious to me.

Lee match fixingThis is why I applaud the massive 12 year ban for Lee. Many may say this is excessive and he is just one small cog on a bigger scale.

But the point is, if you take out enough small cogs within the sport, there will be no means for the bigger cogs to operate.

Hopefully other sports can take heed and follow snookers lead. If other sports, where match fixing is much more of a problem, can be more dedicated. Through extensive investigations and serious commitment, they will hopefully catch and hand out severe bans and suspensions to anybody taking part in match / results fixing.

I believe a big punishment should fit this extensive crime. Otherwise there would be no deterrent to so called sports stars that have been swayed and influenced by the lure of dirty money.
