Bio: Admittedly, this is not a spectacular player who will excite you or get you out of your seat.
However, to the real knowledgeable football manager fans, this is the type of player every manager needs in their team if they have aspirations of progression and achieving.
Maier is a steady, consistent, silky, midfield maestro. When he is in his stride, he will run games with his tika-taka type of passing ability, dictating the play, orchestrating things from deep, spreading the ball from left to right and trying to play probing balls.
You wont get many late runs into the box for goal scoring opportunities, but you will get a leader in midfield, who will pass teams to death, create chances and control games.
He is also a very reliable penalty taker and for me, a great plus was the fact that he rarely got injured. Without really catching the eye, he was often the top or one of the top assist players in the team.
He soon became a favourite due to his natural fitness, consistency and reliability. His vision and passing ability was impressive and if you get a few good attacking, flair players in, he would have a field day running the game from deep.
He went on to become a very reliable and loyal captain for me and a reputation as a world class midfielder.
