TEAM: MANCHESTER CITY
Surprisingly, the Premier League winners did not take this away and even more surprisingly, Man City did. It wasn’t even that close. Man City ended the season with five awards, followed by the league champions Arsenal with four awards.
In joint third on three awards were Man Utd, Notts Forest and Brentford. Other clubs that notched multiple awards with two were Tottenham, Leeds, Sunderland, Newcastle and Bournemouth. Three clubs did not receive a single award this season; one was Liverpool.
GOALKEEPER: EMILIANO MARTINEZ (Aston Villa)
I had to go deep into a tiebreaker to decide this one. Two keepers finished level on five awards for the season, last season’swinner Pickford and the Aston Villa keeper. In the end, Martinez took it, having played fewer league games (32) than Pickford (38).
Alone in second on three awards was Sunderland keeper Roefs. Several keepers finished joint third on two awards: Arsenal’s Raya, Crystal Palace’s Henderson, Burnley’s Dubravka, Man Utd’s Lammens, Tottenham’s Vicario, Fulham’sLeno and Brentford’s Kelleher.
DEFENDER: GABRIEL (Arsenal)
It was another two-horse race for this award. Both Gabriel and the Spurs defender finished level on four awards each. However, the Arsenal man took it as he also won an unsung hero award for the season.
There were five defenders in joint second on two awards. Sunderland duo Ballard and Mukiele. Arsenal’s Timber. Man Utd’s Maguire and Liverpool’s Konate.
MIDFIELDER: BRUNO FERNANDES (Man Utd)
Traditionally, this is one of the fiercest competitions with the fewest multiple awards, and this season was no different. However, mirroring the Man Utd captain’s player-of-the-season award, Fernandes takes this with four awards for the season.
In joint second with two awards each were Bournemouth and Man City’s Semenyo. Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes. Man City duo Doku and Foden and Aston Villa’s Rogers. This category had the second most winners, with 26 players winning a midfielder award.
FORWARD: IGOR THIAGO (Brentford)
Undoubtedly, the surprise of the season was the Brentford forward. He finished the Premier League season as the second top scorer to Haaland. But here he was, the top dog with five forward awards.
Man City’s Haaland was alone in second with four awards. In joint third with three awards each were Chelsea’s Joao Pedro and Aston Villa’s Watkins. Only two other forwards receive multiple awards. Liverpool’s Ekitike and Arsenal’sGyokeres, with two each.
MANAGER: MIKEL ARTETA (Arsenal)
Generally, this award does not mirror what happened in the Premier League. But this time was the exception as the Arsenal manager finished with five awards, winning the Premier League with Arsenal after a 22-year wait.
Semi-surprisingly, in second was the debutant, Sunderland’s Le Bris on four awards, and third was Man City’s Guardiola on three awards. Six other managers won multiple awards, including Tottenham’s Frank. Crystal Palace’s Glasner. Aston Villa’s Emery. Brentford’s Andrews. Man Utd’s Carrick and Bournemouth’s Iraola, with two awards.
UNSUNG HERO: ANTOINE SEMENYO (Man City)
As per usual, this category was very close, with the most individual winners (30) and the fewest multiple winners (3). However, only three players finished with two awards each. The Man City man takes it as he also won two midfielder awards.
The other two players who finished with multiple awards were Brighton’s Danny Welbeck and Tottenham’s Palhinha.
GAME1: ARSENAL 2-3 MAN UTD
Arsenal opened the scoring when Odegaard’s shot came off Martinez, under pressure from Timber (29). United equalised when Zubimendi’s poor pass was picked up by Mbuemo, who rounded the keeper and slotted home (37).
In the second half, United took the lead from Dorgu’s rocket off the underside of the bar following an exchange of passes with Fernandez (50). Arsenal equalised when Marino touched in on the line following a corner (84). But minutes later, Cunha won it with a wonderful strike from outside the box, curling low inside the near post (87).
GAME2: EVERTON 3-3 MAN CITY
Doku opened the scoring in the first half with a lovely finish (43). However, in the second half, Everton equalised when Barry capitalised on Guehi’s horrendous error (68). Everton then took the lead when O’Brien headed home at the near post from a corner (73).
Everton then scored a third when Barry tapped in from a few yards (73). Haaland then pulled a goal back (83) before Doku earned a point at the death with a wonderful curling effort from outside the box (90+7).
GAME3: MAN UTD 4-4 BOURNEMOUTH
In the last game of the Premier League week, we were treated to an eight-goal thriller. Amad gave United an early lead (15), which was cancelled out by Semenyo (30). However, Casemiro restored the lead on the stroke of half-time (45+4).
Bournemouth came out on fire in the second half with goals from Evanilson (46) and a Lovely free kick from Tavernier (52). However, Fernandes scored the goal of the day with a lovely free kick to level the scores (77).
Two minutes later, Man Utd thought they had won it through Cunha (79). But Bournemouth pulled level through substitute Kroupi (84) to make it 4-4.
GOAL1: HARRISON REED (Fulham) vs Liverpool
In stoppage time, after just conceding a goal. Fulham did well to outsmart Liverpool by faking a long throw. Instead, they took it short on the left side of the pitch. Kevin collected the throw and passed it square to Reed.
He took a touch, and from over 30 yards out, on the left side of the box, with all the Liverpool players in the box, failing to close him down. He fired a stunning effort that arrowed into the top corner of the net, giving the keeper no chance.
GOAL2: HARRY WILSON (Fulham) vs Crystal Palace
From the inside right position, Iwobi fired the ball into Wilson. He then expertly flicked the ball with the outside of his boot to Jimenez, on the edge of the box.
Jimenez touched it back first-time to Wilson, who swivelled and ran into the box for the return. Wilson then executed a beautiful effort from the outside of the boot, which swerved away from the keeper into the far left corner.
GOAL3: WILLIAM OSULA (Newcastle) vs Man Utd
With ten men, as the clock ticked into stoppage time. Trippier played a ball down the right for Osula to run onto down the line.
He then cut inside his marker, glided to the edge of the box, completed two step-overs to gain half a yard, then curled a lovely effort with his left for inside the far post.
FOOL: CHELSEA FC
This award naturally saw the most diverse recipients, with three awards to officials, four to managers, eight to clubs and nine going to players. However, after a disastrous season that promised so much, Chelsea finished with five awards, two ahead of anyone else.
Alone in second was Tottenham on three awards, as they narrowly avoided relegation. In joint third on two awards each were Liverpool, also Slot, West Ham and Amorim. To add to these, Postecoglou also received a fool award, as did Liam Rosenior.
