Roger Federer broke British hearts to claim his 7th Wimbledon singles title against Andy Murray, in a 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 victory. In doing so he tied Pete Sampras’s record while extending his Grand Slam record to 17 titles. He will also return to the top of the rankings for the first time since May 2010.
Leading up to the final all the talk was about Murray becoming the first Brit to reach the final since someone called Bunny Austin did in 1938, a person who I had no idea about, which more or less signifies the pressure Murray was under.
Ironically with this defeat he joins his coach Ivan Lendl (a player I was a big fan of back in the day) in having lost his first four Grand Slam finals.
The final started great for Andy Murray who broke Federer in the very first game , but Roger Federer quickly broke back and an early tug of war ensued.
The next break of serve happened in the 9th game when Murray broke to lead 5-4 a game after he saved two break points. He then confidently served to win the set 6-4.
As the second set started and crowd sensed a famous victory for the home town hero but there was still a lot of tennis to be played. The second set went with serve right up to Federer leading 6-5 with Murray serving to stay in the set. Previously he had saved at least 3 or 4 break points but Federer claimed the set 7-5 with an exquisite drop shot.
The rain came down early in the third set while the match was tied at 1-1, the players had to wait around 40 minutes while the roof was closed.
When the players emerged it looked as though Federer handled the wait better than the Scotsman as he sent Murray scuttling around the court causing him to slip on several occasions.
Federer broke Murray in the 6th game to take a 4-2 lead, the rest of the set went with serve with the Swiss ominously taking it 6-3 and looking confident.
Murray was now up against it, 1-2 down and battling one of the greatest players to pick up a racket who in the last few games seemed to be back to his best.
Federer broke Murray’s serve to lead 3-2 with a sweet back had pass. From then on the set went with serve and eventually Federer served out for the victory when Murray’s return just went wide to the relief of Federer who then collapsed to the floor in sheer joy.
A dejected Murray found it hard to choke back tears in the post match interview dispelling any past assumptions or rumours of him not caring.
Although now he unfortunately has the unenviable record of losing his first four grand slam finals just like his coach, he can take heart in the fact that Ivan Lendl did go on to win 8 Grand Slams……But sadly no Wimbledon’s.
how funny would it be if we ended up starting a swiss-miss teinns group out of all of this!i can see it now semi-regular teinns meet-ups for the next year and then, suddenly a swiss-miss all-star teinns team that takes on other design houses and creative agencies in the city followed by accolades and glory, wtih a trip to the french open years down the road, when our offspring have inherited our roles and taken it to a new level.
