History is made as Bisping becomes first Brit to win a UFC title.
It’s so typical in the fast paced. Ever changing and always unpredictable world of the UFC. That just 19 months ago, Bisping got dominated and chocked out in the second round by Luke Rockhold, the man he eventually beat to make history and become the new UFC middleweight Champion.
Since that 2014 November showdown in Sydney Australia. Both fighters went on to have very different 2015’s.
Rockhold, after his impressive, performance of the night defeat of Bisping. Choked out Brazilian Lyoto Machida in the second round to earn him another performance of the night award.
This earned him a title shot against the unbeaten Chris Weidman, where he was victorious in the 4th round, in what was the fight of the night at UFC194 only six months ago.
In contrast. Following his defeat to Rockhold. Bisping beat CB Dolloway in a unanimous points decision in April.
Then two months later, defeated Thales Leites in a wafer thin split decision victory. Not exactly top billing opponents.
But this set up a mega showdown with Anderson Silva in London, only four months ago in February. Credited it wasn’t the Anderson Silva of old, but it was still Anderson Silva.
Just a day before his 37th birthday. Bisping had to weather the storm, after being knocked down by a flying knee, at the end of the third round.
He eventually won a tight unanimous points victory, pulling off a fight of the night victory in his home country.
It still wasn’t enough to earn him a title shot, as Rockhold & Weidman were scheduled to rematch. But again, in the unpredictable world of the UFC. Nothing is certain and anything is possible.
Just two weeks before the June 4th showdown, Chris Weidman was struck down with a spinal injury and his loss was Bisping’s gain.
It seemed all the stars aligned for the 37 year old, 10 year UFC veteran Bisping. Who won The Ultimate Fighter season 3 back in 2006.
After losing two title eliminators to Dan Henderson in 2009.
Then Chael Sonnen in 2012. To get this unexpected last minute title shot.
It was a case of third time lucky and he wasn’t gonna let this one pass him by.
He stepped up to the plate on two weeks notice and ripped the title from Rockhold in just over three minutes.
His first round KO of the usually stern chinned Rockhold, by first catching him with an over hand left, then as Rockhold got back up, catching him again with a swinging right.
Then finishing the fight with a barrage of punches, while Rockhold was laid up against the cage, was a particularly sweet and explosive finish to make UFC history.
At the risk of inviting some critics. To me it seemed Rockhold didnt seem right.
He did announce previously he was coming into the fight with an injury, which is always a bad sign or indications of a fighter already searching for an excuse.
For me, Rockhold had previously looked a deserved and long standing champion, but there was something about him that didn’t look right.
It could have just been over confidence or just the last minute change of opponent. But I am sure he is experienced enough to know, in the UFC any and everything can change in an instant and you have to stay ready and prepared for all possibilities.
However, Bisping’s victory does create some intriguing situations and opened the middleweight division to some new and exciting dimensions.
Bisping & Rockhold are currently 1-1 so a rubber match is a must.
Weidman, when he comes back from injury, will still be looking for his rematch or contractual title shot. Whoever is the title holder at that time.
Then you have Jacare Souza. Following his recent one round demolition of Vitor Belfort, this must have put him in the mix.
You also have the likes of Robert Whittaker and Derek Brunson who have been gradually making a noise in the division.
But they will all be looking up to the new champ. Who you could say is now a role model to all up and coming fighters, and a symbolism of never giving up and always striving to achieve your goals and dreams.
It’s an inspiring story, a culmination of 10 years of hard work, grit, desire, blood, sweat and tears.
Ups and downs and good, old fashioned determination that has led him to this superb and fulfilling point.
Now, nobody can take away the fact that he has made history in the UFC and the UK. For the first time ever, Britain has a UFC champion.
Now all Brits can proudly say the new UFC champion is “Britain’s” Michael Bisping. We salute you sir.
