Is Andre Ward on his way to be becoming the new P4P king?

Andre Ward produced a dominating display this past Saturday 8th September in his home town of Oakland, to retain his WBA and WBC Super Middleweight belts.

In a fight that was supposed to be his toughest yet against Chad Dawson, who moving down from Light Heavyweight where he won the WBC belt from Bernard Hopkins in his last encounter. Ward looked in control from early, dropping his opponent 3 times on the way to a 10th round stoppage.

Some may argue that losing the 7 pounds to make super middleweight could have drained Dawson and made him seem sluggish against Ward. This is a factor but to be honest, this fight was no different to Ward’s previous bouts where he was hard to tie down, he dictated the pace and seemed to connect on a regular basis.

The surprise was the fact that Ward, who is not known as a big puncher (14 knockouts from 26 wins), dropped Chad Dawson and seemed to be the stronger puncher. In round 3 Ward dropped Dawson with an over hand left which sent him to one knee.

Then, early in round four Dawson hit the canvas again from another Ward left hand, both fighters legs became tangled which sent them both to the floor but there was no doubt it was the Ward left hand which caused it all. Dawson did do well to survive the round as Ward looked to end the fight but psychologically the scars had the damage had already been done.

The third and final time Dawson hit the canvas was in the 10th round, by this time Dawson looked a frustrated fighter as during the previous rounds Ward demonstrated his supreme boxing ability by catching Dawson on a regular basis while avoiding any damage.

In the end, Ward delivered four unanswered blows, mixing the shots beautifully from head to body which forced Dawson to take a knee. He rose at eight but when ref Steve Smoger asked if he should stop the fight Dawson nodded and replied yes.

This combined with his super six success where he defeated current and former world champions Carl Froch, Mikkel Kessler and Arthur Abraham, without any of these fighters making a serious dent in him, must have staked him claim for the pound for pound No1.

On that list, obviously you have Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao as the top two. Pacquiao has been defeated recently (albeit controversially) against Tim Bradley and Mayweather, after a tough fight with Miguel Cotto, then going to jail for 3 months, has not got many fights left in him and at 35 is passed his very best.

In January I compiled my top 20 P4P boxers list where Ward was in fifth position. Apart from the top two the other fighters above him were Juan Manuel Marquez and Sergio Martinez, with the Klitschko brothers in 6th and 7th position.

Out of all these fighters Ward is the only one in his 20’s, and to already be a multiple world champion, fighting and convincingly beating other former and current world champions must say something and is a huge statement.

Ward seems to get better every time I watch him fight, his defensive skills and ability to hit and not get hit against the very best in his division is reminiscent of Mayweather who for me is just about the P4P king.

I will be compiling another P4P list in January 2013, by this time both the Klitschko brothers will have fought but Martinez, who is due to fight Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on Sept 15th will be the only fighter above him to fight. I am already making a case for him to be in the top three, some may even make a case for him to be No1, time will tell but he is certainly not far off that!
